As students of paper writing, we oftentimes forget the importance of the reflective essay. It allows us to take time out of our busy schedules and reflect on different aspects of our lives by penning down thoughts on how they’ve impacted us over the past year. No matter what grade level or field of study you are in, it will always be important to take time out of the fast-paced lifestyle that we find ourselves in today. We are called upon to reflect on the past, present, and possible future scenarios that might or might not take place in our lives. It is during these times that we can gain a more accurate idea of our true level of maturity. To truly benefit from the assignment, we must be able to think critically and organize our thoughts.

The reflective essay is a great way to keep yourself grounded and goal-oriented. Instead of focusing on all that you have accomplished, it provides a more accurate depiction of your true potential. When reflecting upon what has happened over the past year, it is challenging to simply select the most important or influential moments that led to this very moment. With that being said, you must be able to stay focused, yet open minded. We as students must be able to identify our strengths and weaknesses, but stay humble and share those details with other peers. It is a good opportunity to take time out of the busy school year to evaluate your growth.

It is important to keep in mind that this assignment should be reflective, yet not too personal. When you are reflecting upon your past year, there are certain outcomes that you would like to try and avoid repeating. For example, if you did not make the honor roll this last semester, there are many ways in which you can avoid repeating that same outcome this upcoming semester. If you are struggling to find the right words to use for your reflective essay, there is a simple trick you can try. Write out a list of all the different schools you have applied to. Then, choose one subject in which you have excelled in, but are not sure how to present that information. It is an effective way to help organize your thoughts without worrying about what you want to say.

Understanding what you want to say is not an easy task. It will take time, but the benefit of taking that extra time is well worth it in the long run. You can also try reading over your old essays that you’ve written. If you can find a pattern in the organization and flow of those essays, it might be helpful to you as well.

Keep yourself motivated and work hard. Challenge yourself to think outside of the box and avoid simply reusing information from your previous essays.
The reflective essay is exactly what it sounds like, only you are the only one who will be reading it. It is an opportunity to take the time to think about various aspects of your life, not just grade-specific assignments.
